About changing the narrative

Changing the Narrative is a podcast that focuses on creating a positive narrative for one of our most vulnerable populations, the homeless. The podcast explores six candidates that range across different ages and experience bases and asks the same set of questions to study different perspectives on the issue. Homelessness has been a problem in our city and country for hundreds of years. The issue is getting progressively worse as housing prices increase and time goes on. Our society leans on others to solve this problem, like our government or social workers. To begin to solve the years of failures in our system and to help our people we need to all be a part of the change. This begins with acknowledging the problem and acknowledging the individuals. We need to humanize people experiencing homelessness as a society. Homelessness is not an identity of someone, it is a period in their life. We can be part of the change and this crisis is solvable. This project is a step towards solving the crisis by acknowledging the problem, educating others, and recognizing and allowing ourselves to be educated. Let us all be part of the change.

My Questions:

  • What is your role in our community?

  • What do you do when you walk by a homeless person in your neighbourhood? Would a smile help?

  • Do you believe the negativity displayed in media or school has affected the problem of homelessness and how can we change it now?

  • Do you think if the community as a whole changes its approach towards homelessness, the problem will improve?

  • What are your views on the Callahan vs. Carey case and the arguments about it today?

  • What is your view on how New York City deals with homelessness?

  • Compared to other countries how do you think the United States deals with the homeless crisis?

  • What can we New Yorkers do to help people experiencing homelessness?
